Presentiment

Presentiment

By Desanka Maksimović

I met you when the snow did melt,
Melt, and a tepid wind did blow.
As the arrival of spring my soul felt,
Felt, I breathed the air hungrily so.
Fondly I beheld the marks of your feet,
The marks left in the white snow;
I knew you would be my darling sweet,
My darling sweet my entire life, oh.

I met you on a day bright so,
A day drunk, fresh and soft, yet.
I felt as if I had known you long ago,
Long ago, though we had just met.
Fondly I beheld the marks of your feet,
The marks left in the white snow;
I knew you would be my darling sweet,
My darling sweet my entire life, oh.

I met you when the ice melted away,
Melted away at the awakening of spring;
When day was red, yet sad and gray,
When both joy and sorrow it did bring.
Fondly I beheld the marks of your feet,
The marks left in the white snow;
I knew you would be my darling sweet,
My darling sweet my entire life, oh.

Predosećanje

Poznala sam te kad sneg se topi,
topi, i duva vetar mlak.
Blizina proleća dušu mi opi,
opi, pa žudno udisah zrak.
S nežnošću gledah stopa ti trag,
trag po snegu belom;
i znadoh da ćeš biti mi drag,
drag u životu celom.

Poznala sam te u zvonki dan,
dan pijan, svež i mek.
Činjaše mi se već davno znan,
znan, kad te poznadoh tek.
S nežnošću gledah stopa ti trag,
trag po snegu belom;
i znadoh da ćeš biti mi drag,
drag u životu celom.

Poznala sam te kad kopni led,
led, dok se budi proleća dah;
kad dan je čas rumen, čas setan, bled,
kad sretno je i tužno u isti mah.
S nežnošću gledah stopa ti trag,
trag po snegu belom;
i znadoh da ćeš biti mi drag,
drag u životu celom.
