A Poem

A Poem

By Jovan Dučić

Suddenly, black has fallen the night,
As black as the raven’s wing.
With their sharp thorns roses white,
Early in the new day up will spring.

A cocooned worm weaves quietly,
Silk for the Tsar’s robe frilled.
The Milky Way shines brightly,
And a pond gets with silver filled.

In the dark, seeds quickly sprout,
A whole wood is soon to grow!
Yet, on my path gleams only doubt,
Of my mind the sun and glow.

Translation from the Serbian by:

Pesma

Noć je najednom pala crna
Kao pod krilom gavranovim.
Bele će ruže s oštrog trna,
Da planu rano s danom novim.

Učaurena buba ćuti
I prede svilu za plašt Cara.
Zapališe se Mlečni Puti,
I prepuni se srebrom bara.

Zrno u mraku žurno klija,
Da ga izraste cela šuma!
A na mom putu sama sija,
Sumnja, to sunce mog uma.
