The Song of Darkness

The Song of Darkness

By Jovan Dučić

All armies of the night glide,
Flags of darkness are flown;
The wind strew the stars aside
And the last leaves were blown.

Black roosters of midnight
Have crowed thrice already;
In the harbour shines no light
Where my ship decays steady.

The black wind will blow,
And black rains will flow,
Till the day shall show
Its childlike eyes of a doe.

Something that craves us
Ever and with no might,
On the distant shores thus
Will be dying this night.

Translation from the Serbian by:

Pesma mraka

Sve vojske noći jezde,
Zastave mraka vihore;
Vetar je razneo zvezde
I zadnje lišće sa gore.

Ponoćni crni petli
Već su se triput čuli;
U luci far ne svetli
Gde brod moj mirno truli.

Crni će vetar da piri,
I kiše padaće crne,
Dok dan na okno zaviri
S detinjim očima srne.

Nešto što vapi nama
Oduvek i bez moći,
Na daljnjim obalama
Umreće ove noći.
