The Soul

The Soul

By Jovan Dučić

Why do you cry day and night, my dear?
Happiness lost is still happiness sweet!
The woe in your soul that evokes its beat
Is one piece of it that does persevere.

Don’t let a bitter tear blur your eye drear:
Happiness ne’er dies even when it goes by.
That vague echo from afar is the cry
And voice of your soul that inside you hear.

In lonely nights when sorrowfully hum
Rivers full of stars, hills with hay filled…
That tune in our ears has never trilled,
But, the soul feels and grasps its thrum.

Translation from the Serbian by:

Duša

Zašto plačeš, draga, svu noć i dan ceo.
Izgubljena sreća još je uvek sreća!
I taj jad u duši što te na nju seća,
To je jedan njezin zaostali deo.

Ne daj mutnoj suzi na sumorno oko:
Sreća nikad ne mre, i onda kad mine.
Taj eho kog jedva čuješ iz daljine,
To još ona zbori u tebi duboko –

U samotne noći kad žalosno šume
Reke pune zvezda, gore pune sena…
Do sluha ta pesma ne dopire njena,
No duša je sluti, čuje i razume.
