A Bleak Day

A Bleak Day

By Vojislav Ilić

It’s raining lightly. Far away
The thick mist hovers low;
In silence passes the day.
Bleak are the hill and meadow.
The gloom grips the whole
World, there’s no living soul.

Across the desolate plains
Only tedium rules and reigns,
Nothing does the heart require,
And to nothing does it aspire.

Unmindful, I look around.
Sluggishly the hours pass,
Of distant bells the sound
And voices are heard, alas!
Echoing far and wide…..
Someone must have died.

Translation from Serbian by:
Ljiljana Parović

Sumoran dan

Kiša sipi……U daljini
Povila se magla gusta;
Dan prolazi u tišini.
Gora nema, polja pusta.
U mrtvilu sve počiva,
Nigde nema stvora živa.

Svuda pustos i dosada
Caruje i vlada,
Niti srce stogod želi,
Nit se čemu nada.

Rasijano pogled bludi.
Tromo idu časi,
Iz daljine zvono gudi,
Razležu se glasi –
Odjekuju na daleko….
Mora da je umro neko.
