Longing

Longing

By Jovan Dučić

The eve is quiet; empty is the sky
As the last ray in the alley glows brief
Alone on the path stands Venus shy
All nude and timid, and with no fig leaf.

Her body will be softly bathed by night
In the scent of roses and the pure dew;
Her face will be clad in silver moonlight,
Her hair will shine with the midnight hue.

She awaits, nude; her passionate stare
Raised towards heaven supplicates entire!
As her coy eyes towards the skies glare,
Her bare bosom and arms quiver in desire.

The night goes by, monotonous whole,
The wind spills and pours moonlight;
The sky and earth are asleep; not a soul
Will know this pagan love in the numb night.

Čežnja

Nebesa prazna… N’jemo veče slazi,
Negdje u aleji zadnji zračak blista.
Mramorna Venera sama je na stazi,
Gola i stidna bez smokvova lista.

Veče će joj da okupa t’jelo
U mirisu ruže i u čistoj rosi;
Mjesečina zlatom da pozlati čelo,
I ponoćno inje da prospe po kosi.

I ona čeka… i pogled pun žudi
Vapije nebo, i strada i moli.
I dok stidan pogled u nebesa bludi,
Čežnjom dršću prsa i udovi goli.

Tako noć prolazi, tiho, jednoliko,
Mjesečina sv’jetli, noćni vjetrić veje.
Spi nebo i zemlja – i ne znade niko
Za tu strašnu ljubav sred mrtve aleje.
