And I Think…

And I Think…

By Ivo Andrić

And I think: how good it is to be created
Like this,
To be poor, alone, of frail health and
Plain,
Without anything attractive for other people;
And to be able (oh, unparalleled,
Invaluable grace!) so often to
Conjure up and create in our mind every
Beauty and every good of this country and
Unfathomable other worlds.
And we never cease seeking the meaning and
Reason for the misery, predicament and ache.
And even if we fail in this we
Always find
Submissiveness and sympathy.

Translation from the Serbian by:
Ljiljana Parović

I mislim…

I mislim: kako je dobro sto smo stvoreni ovakvi,
Što smo sirmasi, sami, tankog zdravlja, i neugledni,
Bez ičeg privlačnog za ostale ljude;
I što možemo (besprimerna, dragocena milosti!) tako često
Da zamislimo i oživimo duhom svaku lepotu
I svako dobro ove zemlje i neslućenih drugih svetova.
A za jad, muku i bol ne prestajemo da tražimo smisao
I razlog. Pa i kad ne uspemo u tom mi nalazimo uvek
Pokornost i sažaljenje.
