Pearly Eyes

Pearly Eyes

By Sima Pandurović

As the spirit of fall into the stir of leaves dry,
As grief into the life of our longing restless,
It crept into my soul with many a sigh
And heave so silent and ceaseless –
A quiet suggestion the chilly skies from,
Deep as the passion that in true hearts lies
And dark as night – the suggestion of some
Pearly eyes.

Blue, hazy and innocent was their shine,
The shine of a sea-hidden, dear shell;
It imparted a secret expression divine
Of our yearnings and past aches as well;
It hid the treasure of our chaste memories,
The softness of yellow roses and fresh lilies.
Over me the sorrow shines on with no guise
Of some pearly eyes.

But then, when the star of my destiny sets
Behind a small mound of transient desire,
When the last, general predicament besets
And our woes and joys vanish and retire,
Above me will, like honey lips that beguile,
And the soft glimmering light of the skies,
Float all the while, the melancholy smile
Of some pearly eyes.

Biserne oči

Kao duh jeseni u šum lišća svela,
K’o tuga u život naših želja tajnih,
U moju se dušu nečujno uplela,
Na plimi uzdaha nemih i beskrajnih,
Sugestija tiha sa visina lednih,
Dubinom strasti svih srdaca vernih
I tamne noći – sugestija jednih
Očiju bisernih.

Njihov je sjaj bio plav, mutan i čedan,
Sjaj morem skrivene, skupocene školjke;
On je dav’o dubok neznan izraz jedan
Čežnje naših snova i minule boljke;
On je skriv’o blago uspomena čednih,
Nežnost žutih ruža i krinova smernih.
Nada mnom i sada sija tuga jednih
Očiju bisernih.

I onda, kad zvezda moje sudbe zađe
Za malu humku trošnih zemnih želja,
Poslednji, opšti udes kad nas snađe
I nestane naših patnja i veselja,
Nada mnom će, kao čar usana mednih,
K’o lelujav, meki sjaj visina sfernih,
Lebdeti i tada setan osmeh jednih
Očiju bisernih.
