First Snow

First Snow

By Vojislav Ilić

At break of day, thru twilight deep,
Snow-covered plains rest asleep.
And the icy winds thru valleys still
The empty fields at times they chill.
A light gust thru the village sweeps,
On the eaves and doors snow it heaps.

In the village still at bright dayspring
The cold, fair night lifts not its wing.
From afar, only a fox is sneaking in,
To prey on hens and young chicken –
And solely the prints of its paws bare
Are seen in the first snow here an’ there.

Translation from the Serbian by:

Prvi sneg

U osvitku zore, kroz sumračak tavni,
pokrivene snegom počivaju ravni.
A studeni lahor kroz doline mirne
preko pustih polja kadikada pirne –
i s vihorom lakim seoca se hvata,
pa zasiplje snegom i strehe i vrata.

A u selu jošte u prozorje milo
noć, vedra i hladna, ne podiže krilo.
Iz daljine samo lisica se krade,
pa kokoši vreba i piliće mlade –
i od njenih šapa i tuna i tamo
u prvome snegu trag se vidi samo.
