Midday

Midday

By Jovan Dučić

O’er the isle with many a cypress and pine,
The early, lofty sun with heat is all aglow;
And o’er the wood and shores lightly flow
Odors of the springtime sea, salty and fine.

The violet-glowing, granite hills rising high,
Are mirrored in the sea; calm and foamless,
The surface kisses the rocks all motionless;
O’er the water gleams a warm, glassy sky.

The sun dust glitters above the dun sand;
At times, a silvery sea-gull soars aloft,
All shimmering. And the reefs smell soft
Of fish and th’ scent of a purple heath land.

All is so peaceful. And in my soul long
And long I can see the sea, calm and still:
The oleander woods, many a violet hill,
And a misty horizon stretching far along.
Lying mute within are lush, silvery-gray
Shores; and the early, lofty sun o’er the isle
Shines bright; the waves are calm a while –
Th’ seagull’s still aglow. Quiet. It’s midday.

Podne

Nad ostrvom punim čempresa i bora,
Mlado, krupno sunce prži, puno plama;
I trepti nad šumom i nad obalama
Slan i modar miris proletnjega mora.

Ljubičaste gore, granitne, do svoda,
Zrcale se u dnu; mirno i bez pene,
Površina šušti i celiva stene;
Svod se svetli topal, staklen, iznad voda.

Prah sunčani trepti nad ispranim peskom,
I srebrni galeb ponekad se vidi,
Svetluca nad vodom. I mirišu hridi
Mirisom od riba i modrijem vreskom.

Sve je tako tiho. I u mojoj duši
Produženo vidim ovo mirno more:
Šume oleandra, ljubičaste gore,
I bled obzor što se proteže i puši.
Nemo stoje u njoj srebrnaste, rodne
Obale i vrti; i svetli i pali
Mlado, krupno sunce; i ne šušte vali —
Galeb još svetluca. Mir. Svuda je podne.
