Listening

By Jovan Dučić

When the night falls on the sapphire sea,
And far away the Milky Way glows bright,
Then like a bird from its nest soft and light
All tangled in moss and weed of the sea,

Soars my soul. And desires that for long
Have haunted and stifled me with no relief,
Do mesmerize my soul stricken with grief,
As o’er me midnight stars hum their song.

Then my soul on a wave descends light,
Like a black silk-winged seagull of night,
And like a child tearfully drifts into sleep.

And when awakened by the dawn so gray,
The sea’s nocturnal tune hums in it all day,
Full of some inconsolable melancholy deep.

Slušanje

Kada padne veče povrh vode plave,
I zasvetle Mlečni Puti iz daleka,
Tada kao ptica iz svog gnezda meka,
Sve od mahovine i od morske trave,

Prhne moja duša. I želje što dave,
I biju, i more, još od pamtiveka,
Nju izmame tako u tuzi bez leka…
dok ponoćne zvezde šume iznad glave.

Kô svileni crni noćni galeb, tako
Moja duša pada na talas, polako,
I zaspi u svojim suzama, kô dete.

A kad je probudi srebrnasta zora,
U njoj vas dan šumi noćna pesma mora,
Puna jedne bolne neutešne sete.
